About IPALS

  1. To develop an integrated, interdisciplinary team of scientists, policy makers, clinical/public health practitioners, voluntary sector safety organizations, and community stakeholders to reduce the burden of unintentional injury in Canada;
  2. to build capacity in the field by training a new generation of injury researchers from a variety of disciplines;
  3. to develop and promote evidence-based injury prevention policies, programs, and practice, using an interdisciplinary, intersectoral perspective); and
  4. to generate new knowledge, translate existing knowledge, and disseminate information to key stakeholders in academic and community settings.

The interdisciplinary nature of IPALS provides a unique opportunity to develop a more comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to the study of injuries and their prevention.  Our proposed program of research will examine unintentional injuries in children, the workforce, and older adults from an interdisciplinary perspective based on a population health framework. To successfully implement a program of research of this magnitude and complexity, a team of researchers from diverse backgrounds and methodological expertise has been assembled. The members of our Institutional Capacity Enhancement (ICE) team include researchers with expertise in three CIHR themes: clinical, population health, and health services research.

The goals of this grant are to reduce the injury burden in Canada; to develop a program of research that enhances collaboration among team members; and to nurture the next generation of injury researchers via training and recruitment. The proposed program of research encompasses three thematic areas:

  1. Patterns and Causes of Injury;
  2. Knowledge Synthesis and Knowledge Transfer, and;
  3. Injury Prevention Interventions.
